Pup Naming

Category: Uncategorized | Date: Feb 07 2009 | By: zimbabwewilddogs

Hi guys,

I’ve recently put together a set of photos of the pups from the Mapari pack.  I’ve done this for all the packs, for the pups that are still alive now that the litters are are over 6 months old. I   But I’ve really run out of inspiration now!!!

I’ve posted some pictures of the Mapari pack pups below: any suggestions for names would be great….  None of them have especially distinctive markings and no names seem particularly fitting, so the choice is limitless!  There are 10 pups in total in the pack: perhaps a theme would be a good plan…?  The only thing that really strikes me is that they are fairly plain dogs in general, with one small white mark on each of their back right thighs…  I’ve posted 4 pics below: lets see if we can get these named and maybe a theme going…?  Additional names for the rest of the litter (6 more pups) are welcome  (my internet connection is too slow to put up more than these 4 photos).

I’ll be out of touch for a while now as I’m going on a course to get my license to dart and immobilise wild dogs.  I’ll be back about the 18th and will look forward to some truly inspirational names!

Four names I would choose would be:

1) Shiloah
2) Shamen
3) Contessa
4) Trinity

Hope you like them as much as I.

Great work! I really enjoy reading your blogs. I check your site every day.

Spot the Dog! Fantastic. Takes me back to learning to read. So we could also have Blot (from on the Landscape) or continuing the literary theme (Out Out Damn Spot) there would be MacBeth, Lady, Duncan, Witch, Duffy (contemporary take on Macduff), but I can’t remember any more characters. Scot, I suppose - choose the one who looks most like Tim. Dot. And if one disappears and comes back you could call it Plot (as in Lost the…) There you go, ten completely daft names. At least you’ll laugh whenever you go to see them. Good luck with the darting course. Ems xx

We like the name “maxwell” “max” “roxy” or “hamilton”. these are very cute names. i want one!

You could go for a letter theme, you know “T” Timmy, Toby, Tina, or “S” Sammy, Spot, Sylvie.
Or since it’s the Mapari pack you could use the letter M - Minnie, Moby, Milo, etc.

Pup 2 should be called Sniff and pup 3 could be called boomer, pup 4 should be emil. All pretty European for African hunting dogs, but they’re cool names!

Hi folks,

Well I’m back from the capture course now and was thrilled to get such a lot of great ideas for names. Thank you all so much. I’ve got another load of pups that need naming, so I’ll be sure to pick your brains again, once I’ve sorted out the photo IDs….

Junghoon - to answer your questions, we probably have around 80 lions in the conservancy at the moment, split pretty evenly between the north and the south (whilst almost all the wild dogs are in the north). I’m not yet sure of the pup sex ratio, but of the four that I posted photos of; Pup 1 is female, Pup 2 ?, and Pups 3 & 4 are both male. I need to spend a lot more time with them to get the sexes of the others sorted out.

Cheers,

Rosemary
